Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
Therapy can be a helpful and healing experience for anyone seeking to improve their mental health, manage life’s challenges, or gain insight into their emotions and behaviors. If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected, therapy may provide a supportive space to work through those feelings. Therapy is not limited to crisis situations—it can be a proactive choice for growth, empowerment, and self-understanding.
What can I expect during my first session?
Your first session will be a time to get to know each other and discuss what brings you to therapy. We’ll talk about your current challenges, personal history, and goals for therapy. The session is also a chance for you to ask any questions and assess whether you feel comfortable with the therapist. At the end of the session, you and your therapist will collaborate on a treatment plan moving forward, ensuring it aligns with your needs and goals.
How long do therapy sessions last?
Typically, therapy sessions last 50-60 minutes. However, session length may vary depending on the type of therapy and the issues being addressed. We offer 80 minutes sessions as well.
How often will I need to come to therapy?
The frequency of therapy depends on your needs and goals. Some people may find weekly sessions most beneficial, while others may start with biweekly sessions and adjust as they progress. Therapy is most effective when you feel a consistent connection and commitment to the process, but we’ll work with you to find a schedule that feels right for you.
What should I bring to my first therapy session?
You don’t need to bring anything specific, but it can be helpful to reflect on your current challenges, emotional state, and any relevant life experiences. If you have any questions or concerns, bring those as well! Your therapist is there to listen and provide a safe space for you to explore your feelings.
What will happen if I miss a session or need to cancel?
Life happens, and we understand that sometimes schedules change. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we ask that you provide at least 24 hours' notice. This allows us to offer your spot to another client who may need it.
If a session is missed without prior notice or rescheduled within 24 hours, the session fee will apply. We encourage you to communicate openly about any difficulties in attending sessions so that we can work together to find solutions.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is confidential. This means that everything you share with your therapist will remain private, with a few important exceptions that we will explain during your first session (such as when there is risk of harm to yourself or others, or in cases of child abuse). You can always expect that your therapist will respect your privacy and confidentiality.
How much does therapy cost, and do you accept insurance?
We are committed to providing affordable care without compromising on quality. Currently, we are in network for Aetna, UBH|UHC, Oscar Health, Cigna (coming soon).
Also, we can provide you with receipts (superbills) to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement for out-of-network benefits.
How long does therapy take to show results?
The length of therapy varies depending on your unique situation, goals, and the type of therapy you’re engaging in. Some clients begin to notice shifts in their thinking and behavior after a few sessions, while others may need more time to explore deeper issues. Therapy is a process, and the most important part is your commitment to the work. We will work together to set realistic goals and timelines, and you can expect consistent progress along the way.
Can therapy help with specific issues like anxiety, depression, or trauma?
Absolutely. Therapy can be incredibly helpful for addressing a wide range of issues, including but not limited to: Anxiety and panic attacks, depression and mood disorders, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, relationship challenges, life transitions, stress management, and low self-esteem or self-worth. Your therapist will work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your specific concerns and goals.
What if I don’t feel comfortable with my therapist?
It’s important that you feel comfortable and understood by your therapist. If at any point you feel that the therapeutic relationship is not a good fit, we encourage you to share your feelings with your therapist. We are committed to your comfort and progress, and we can either adjust our approach or help you find a different therapist who may be a better match for your needs.
What happens if I have a crisis or need immediate help between sessions?
If you're experiencing a crisis or need immediate support, please contact a local emergency service or go to your nearest emergency room. If you need urgent mental health support but it's not an emergency, many therapists can recommend 24/7 helplines or resources in your area. We also recommend discussing any ongoing concerns or crises with your therapist, so they can provide the appropriate support and resources in future sessions.
